Arestin Therapy

Definition to Patient:  ARESTIN® (minocycline hydrochloride) Microspheres, 1 mg powder contains “Microspheres”, tiny, bead-like particles that are smaller than grains of sand and are not visible to the eye. The Microspheres are filled with the antibiotic minocycline, and they release the drug over time into the infected periodontal pocket, killing the bacteria that cause periodontal disease.

Clinical Information for Patient: ARESTIN® (minocycline hydrochloride) Microspheres, 1 mg is an effective antibiotic treatment that comes in powder form. This powder is placed inside infected periodontal pockets just after the Hygienist finishes the scaling and root planing (SRP) procedure.

Outcome Assessment: ARESTIN® is safe and easy for your Hygienist to administer. Patients treated with ARESTIN® may experience some mild-to-moderate side effects. The most frequent side effects reported in clinical trials were headache (9.0%), infection (7.6%), flu syndrome (5.0%), and pain (4.3%). These side effects occurred at similar rates in patients who received SRP alone and SRP + placebo
