About Bone Grafts

Before and After Images of Dental Bone Grafting

Bacteria and the resulting plaque which continuously forms on your teeth is the primary cause of periodontal disease. Many other factors, though, can cause the disease or influence its progression. Your bone and gums should fit snugly around your teeth. When the tissue and bone is destroyed by periodontal disease, pockets develop and the risk of losing one or more teeth increases.

Fortunately, Dr. Heaton can perform a graft to regenerate bone and reverse some of the resulting damage. Gum tissue is folded back and the bacteria is removed. Material can then be used to stimulate the body's natural ability to regenerate bone and tissue.

The presence of bone is necessary for placement of dental implants. In addition to being the result of perio disease, bone loss can also occur from wearing dentures, injury or trauma. Bone loss can prevent a patient from being a good implant candidate and can also cause an indentation in the jaw line, altering and aging the patient's face.
